Have you ever wondered if your daily use of VPN is all legal?

The quick answer is yes, VPNs are legal unless you are not doing anything illegal with it. For most countries you can do almost anything with VPN and it is still perfectly legal, of course there are few exceptions that have more strict laws than other countries such as China for example.
But remember Torrenting and P2P activities might quickly become illegal at some point, so it is important that you understand the fact. The law with this kind of activities is not straightforward but good thing is, you can download programs for your own use not commercial use or for selling them forward.
Are VPNs legal everywhere?
As we mentioned earlier, some countries are more strict with the use of VPN. For United States and western democracies (Europe) VPN is perfectly legal. Even though they are legal, if you do anything illegal with it, you will for sure make yourself to be in trouble.
Some countries have banned the use of VPN
The use of VPN is not allowed everywhere. For example China, Russia, North Korea and Cuba have banned the use of VPN and using one might be an illegal act. Even the governments there monitor the use of these kind of mechanics.
What makes to use of VPN illegal?
Virtual private networks are cheapest and easiest way to make your online privacy more efficient. There is no reason every why anyone wouldn’t want to ues one. They work great against threats coming from internet, but on the other hand, you can even disguise yourself against government and internet provider monitoring.
So you can see where we are getting.
VPNs are so powerful tool that many unethical user may use it for their own good. They can make a crime and try to hide with VPN so that no one can see who they are and where they are.
This means that these kind of tools appeal to people that do illegal downloads and use the so called “darknet”.
It is important to remember that not every VPN is secure or works as intended. This is why we tested hundreds and hundreds of different VPN providers and listed only the best in our review section.
So in short:
- VPNs are legal in U.S and most western countries including Europe
- Few countries have banned the use of VPN such as: China, Russia, North Korea and Cuba
- VPN is a powerful tool for increasing privacy online, but it can also help with illegal activities
- Law can demand information from users: even though many VPN companies claim that they keep “no-log” policy, this might not be the case. There have been several VPN services that give customer information out if demanded so.
How to use VPN the legal way
If you want to use VPN like it is intended you should follow the basic rule: don’t do anything that is considered illegal.
VPN can be used for different activities that we like to divide between entertainment and privacy purposes. For example completely legal purposes of entertainment uses are:
- Watching streams or accessing foreign content
- Unblocking geographic restrictions
- Downloading torrents and P2P (for own use)
- Getting cheaper flights or prices when accessed through different countries markets
For privacy uses:
- Strong encryption in connection
- Hide ip address and endpoint
- Make no footprints in the internet
- Disguise from internet provider and government
But be careful. Not every countries law are the same. In some cases that are reported there were insidents where some company claimed people to have broken the law when used free online services to look for movies. This was long time ago before VPN was the solution. And of course these people didn’t break the law, they used it for own purposes.
What things are illegal with VPN?
Of course everybody knows what is illegal and what is not, but with VPNs it might be a bit harder to understand what you can do and what not. These basic online activities are still illegal in most countries:
File sharing
The illegal way of file sharing known as torrenting. Torrenting is when you download and upload copyright-protected material such as music, movies or games between each other over internet. If you want to stay safe, you use VPN and don’t upload, you only load.
Hacking (of course)
Unethical activities such as hacking is strictly forbidden everywhere and it is a crime. It can mean getting unauthorized access to companies, networks or individuals and trying to gain benefit from it.
Buying and selling in the dark web
Dark web is underground area which is hardly accessible by non tech-savy users. But being there can lead to problem against law, because there are a lot of illegal content. Actually most of the content there is completely illegal.
Other cybercrimes
There are many other cybercrimes that one can make, but are not related to the use of VPN. So always remember to obey the law in order to avoid problems.
Do's and don'ts with VPN
Remember the use of VPN is at your own risk when you do activities that belong to the grey areas of law.
For example you can still get caught pirating with a VPN. It just makes you much harder to identify and locate, but is not impossible itself.
So the safest bet to use VPN is for streaming, geo-unblocking and privacy. You can use VPN to access different countries Netflix, it is totally legal and you can find guide for Netflix and VPN here.
Always remember to read terms and conditions of the service of product your are going to use VPN for.
You can keep VPN up all the time
All in all VPN is really safe to use and it is pretty hard to do anything illegal with it unless you are really trying. VPNs help you route your traffic away from your internet service provider and secure your connection between end- and start points. It increases your online privacy and security enormously.
Of course there are sometimes you may want to turn it off, for example in order to identify your connection with the bank or so.
